On 2nd April, the competence team was given an insight into first aid measures. The participants learnt the most important steps to take when someone is in distress or injured.
The first step is to use all your senses to recognise the situation if someone is lying motionless on the ground. Is the person conscious or can they be woken up by speaking to them and shaking them? Is he breathing? Does he have injuries on his body?
Self-protection has priority and you should decide how much you can do by yourself depending on the surroundings: Can sources of danger be defused or not? If there are several bystanders, have the necessary measures been clearly communicated and adopted?
The participants also learnt how to make an emergency call. Important for the international Kompetenzteam: While the ‘112’ number is used throughout the EU, the old emergency number ‘999’ is still valid in Poland.
The Rautek rescue manoeuvre, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the recovery position were then demonstrated. All these activities were practised and consolidated in role plays. In keeping with the subject matter, the atmosphere in the course was highly focussed. The fun came at long last during the task of applying a head bandage.
